How to Avoid Gaining Weight When I Stop Smoking
71How to Avoid Weight Gain when I Quit Smoking
If you follow a program like Nicotine Solutions that allows you to change your habits slowly, then you can change your behaviors and you won't stress out your body when you stop smoking. Cold turkey is very stressfull to the body.
If you have ever tried to quit smoking cold turkey...you know what I mean.
I know it sounds crazy, but it takes 21 days to change a habit and you need to give your body time to adjust.
Sometimes people that have quit smoking cold turkey are still recovering from it after 20 years, and they have gained all kinds of weight.
Temporary Weight Gain is only one of the temporary symptoms that your body goes through when you stop smoking. For a complete list of What happens to your body when you quit smoking click here.
Nicotine Solutions teaches smokers how to quit calmly & comfortably over a period of 6 weeks!
There is no need to gain weight when you quit smoking
1. Do NOT substitute anything for the habit.
Don't substitute:
- gum
- candy
- toothpicks
- lemon drops
- pies
- food
- taffy
- sunflower seeds for the habit
If you substitute anything for the habit...(even if it is non-caloric), you will keep the habit alive. If the habit is kept alive long enough, you will eventually either gain a lot of weight and then go back to smoking (because you were thinner as a smoker...well that is what you will tell yourself!), or you will just keep the habit alive enough so that one day.....you may go back to smoking.
2. Drink 1/2 of glass water before each meal. This will fill you up faster so you won't over eat.
3. Drink as much water as you possibly can. Drinking water will help to keep your metabolism up.
4. Cut down on foods with high sodium levels.
5. My neighbor told me about a shoe store that is not everywhere, but what a difference they will make if you can get to one of their stores.
Road Runner Sports has a free service where they will take a heat measurement of where the weight goes when you run and they will also do computerized pictures of your gate as you walk on a treadmill and from that they analyze what type of shoe that you need.
I had never even heard of the shoes that they recommended for me. They said I needed them for stability. I put them on and they were like "butter".
I am so much happier walking with my new, well fitted walking shoes from RoadRunnerSports.
6. Start to exercise at your target heart rate. An easy way to know if you are exercising at your target heart rate is to wear a Sportline Watch. You can find out your heart rate in just a few seconds by just pressing on a silver button on the watch!! It is very cool!

Cold turkey is one of the most difficult ways to stop smoking.
I think healthy snacks could be a good substitution. Or healthy activities. Instead of a smoke break, take a 5 minute walk and really breathe in some fresh air, for example.
well hello im triying to quit smoking but im doing it cold turkey are theres any body changes should i be aware of please let me know
Cold turkey is not only the most stressful but least successful of the ways to quit smoking, and you're spot on about an exercise program to help control weight gain once you stop. Like you mention healthy foods and reducing portion size can go a long way to keeping the gain in check. Thanks for hub.
Def ready for the 26th Oct, so want to give up now, too expensive, and I am fed up of coughing all night in my sleep, plus want a baby, and this is not going to happen unless I quit, especially with my fertility problems.
I truly hope some fellow smoker hubbers decide to try this with me, as we can support each other, and it will help if we all stick together. :)
Hi Lela, another great hub. I can't wait for more and am really looking forward to taking your course so my Husband and I can become another of your success stories. I am not too worried if I do gain some weight once I quit, as I am already too thin, and smoking has largely killed my appetite, so any weight gain for me would actually be a bonus. Can't say quite the same for my Husband hough, as he needs to lose weight.
It would be really great if a group of people reading this hub all agreed to join your course at the same time as my Husband and I start it so we can stay in touch with each other and compare progress here on hubpages. We could also all support each other.
Any takers???
Even if you do gain weight you're still way ahead if you give up. Gaining weight is one by product of giving up, unless you're careful, but giving up smoking has to be the number one thing you can do for your health. Do it regardless
Thanks Lela.Your hubs are very informative. Why don't you write often? You seem to be a storehouse of such useful informations.
No substitution is very informative...I suppose all smokers will benefit from this hub.Great hub Lela.
